Glucose Subtitles for Chrome and Safari
Last updated: October 2026
Your captions never leave your device.
We don't collect, store, sell or share any data about you or what you watch. Translation happens on your computer.
What we don't collect.
The extension has no servers of ours to talk to. Specifically, we do not collect:
- No captions, subtitles or translations
- No browsing history or the addresses of pages you visit
- No video titles or what you watch
- No analytics, telemetry or crash reports
- No cookies, tracking or identifiers
- No account or personal profile
What it does on your device.
- The extension reads the caption text of the video you are watching, and only that. It does nothing on pages without captions.
- Captions are translated on your device, with Chrome’s built-in translator where available (not in Safari) or with OPUS-MT models that run inside the extension.
- Translated text is drawn over the video on your screen. It is not saved and not sent anywhere.
Stored on your device
Your settings
Your target and source language, engine, on/off switch and caption appearance. They are saved with the browser’s extension storage. If you use browser sync (for example Chrome Sync), your browser may sync these settings across your devices under your own browser account. We never receive them.
Translation models
Downloaded language models are kept on your device so they only need downloading once. You can remove them by removing the extension.
Network requests
Model downloads
The first time you use a language pair, the extension downloads its model files from Hugging Face (huggingface.co and hf.co). These are data files, not code. The request contains no captions or personal information, but Hugging Face, like any server, can see your IP address and the files you request. See Hugging Face’s own privacy policy.
Browser language packs
If you choose Chrome’s built-in translator, Chrome itself downloads and manages the language pack, under Google’s privacy policy. The extension only asks Chrome to translate text on your device.
Why it asks for what it asks for.
-
Access to all sites
Captions can appear on any site, often inside embedded player frames, so the extension must run wherever a video plays. It only reads caption text.
-
Storage
Remembers your settings.
-
Offscreen documents
Runs the translation models, which a background service worker cannot host.
-
Hugging Face hosts
Downloads translation model files the first time a language pair is used.
The extension contains no remote code. All JavaScript and WebAssembly ships inside the extension.
Payments
The extension is a one-time payment. Payments are handled by an independent payment provider, which may collect details such as your email address under its own privacy policy. We do not receive your payment details, and the extension itself does not collect or send any information about you.
Sharing and selling
We don't have your data, so we can't sell it, share it, or use it for advertising or creditworthiness.
Changes to this policy
If this changes, we'll update this page and the date above. Our policy for the Glucose media player is on the main privacy page.
